Baldwin Bros 1-2 in SCORE Trophy-Truck
2001 champion Rob MacCachren leads Class 1-2/1600, Overall
Point standings after second round in 2005 SCORE Desert Series
Just 32 points separate top 12 SCORE overall point leaders
heading to Mexico for 37th Tecate SCORE Baja 500
LOS
ANGELES, CA (March 10, 2005) -- Veteran Las Vegas desert
racer Rob MacCachren has found himself in a familiar position--on top
of the Overall and Class 1-2/1600 point
standings after two rounds of the six-race 2005 SCORE Desert Series. MacCachren,
39, has
once again bolted to the top of the world’s foremost desert racing series
with help from Las Vegas’ Bryan Freeman, currently in his first full
season racing with SCORE.
Driving a Fraley-VW,
MacCachren and Freeman finished second out of 46 starters in Class 1-2/1600
in the season-opening SCORE Laughlin
Desert Challenge and
followed that up by defeating a field of 27 starters in the single or two-seater
class
for open wheel desert race cars with 1600cc VW engines. Freeman and Las Vegas’ Danny
Anderson drove the majority of the 240.34-mile race in San Felipe.
MacCachren
also splits driving in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division with team-owner
Gus Vildosola of Mexico, but the Ford F-150 broke down early
in the
race leaving MacCachren stranded in the desert for several hours. SCORE rules
require that a driver or rider of record either start or finish a race in
order to receive points for that race.
SCORE points are
determined both on final finishing position and number of vehicles that started
the race within each
class. The competition is close
and fierce
as a total of just 15 points separate the top 12 leaders.
The World’s
Foremost Desert Racing Series has some down time now before heading south again
to Mexico for Round 3 of the 2005 SCORE Desert Series.
The 37th Tecate SCORE Baja 500, the second of three SCORE races held annually
on
the Baja California peninsula, will be held June 3-5 in Ensenada on the Pacific
Ocean side of the peninsula.
“Bryan has been doing great so far and Danny is as good a driver as there
is, so I decided to let them drive in San Felipe all but the last couple of
miles,” said
MacCachren, a seven-time SCORE class point champion and 2001 SCORE Overall
and Class 1-2/1600 season point winner. “They had a great run going and
I didn’t
want to spoil it for them by doing something foolish. We won four of five races
last year and lost the class and overall title by just four points and we don’t
want that to happen again this year. I drove the first day in Laughlin and
Bryan the second. Our plans now will have Bryan and I splitting the time in
the SCORE
Baja 500, I will drive the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 and we will split the
time again in the SCORE Baja 1000. I will obviously keep driving with Gus in
SCORE
Trophy-Truck as well.”
In the current
SCORE point standings, MacCachren, who has won 10 SCORE races since 2001,
has 131 points, while Class 10 point
leader Kash Vessels, San Marcos,
CA, is second with 124 in a Jimco-Toyota.
The versatile
MacCachren, whose seven SCORE season point crowns have been in four different
classes, has a
commanding lead in Class 1-2/1600 as SCORE rookie
Caleb Gaddis, El Centro, CA, is currently in second, 18 points behind.
With
his first-ever SCORE class win in San Felipe, defending SCORE Trophy-Truck
season champ Jason Baldwin, Laguna Beach, CA, has assumed a one-point
lead over his brother Josh Baldwin, Newport Beach, CA, in the featured
SCORE
racing division for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks.
The Baldwins,
with 91 and 90 points, both drive Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Trucks.
By winning
in San Felipe, MacCachren also put himself at the top of the list in the
chase for the $50,000 Kartek Off-Road bonus purse. The top three overall
point leaders in the 2005 SCORE Desert Series will receive bonus money of
$25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 from the Southern California aftermarket company.
Third
in overall points and second in Class 10 is Darren Hardesty, Ramona, CA,
with 122 points in a Alumi-Craft-VW.
High School basketball
star Andy McMillin, last year’s SCORE Rookie of
the Year who races with his father Scott, is tied with Gaddis for fourth in
overall points and leads the unlimited Class 1 after his impressive overall
and Class
1 victory in San Felipe.
A total of just
10 points separate sixth through 12th place so far in the SCORE Overall point
standings.
Sixth overall
and third in Class 1-2/1600 is the team of L.J. Kennedy, Orange, CA/Brian
Burgess, Riverside, CA, with 109
points in a Porter-VW.
Seventh
overall and third in Class 10 points with 104is the team of Rick Ellison,
Selma, CA/Bill Witt, Henderson, Nev., in their Jimco-Honda.
Eighth overall
and fourth in Class 1-2/1600 is Travis Fletcher, Westminster, CA, with
103 points in a Baja Shop-VW.
Second in Class
1 after his win in Laughlin and ninth in overall points with 102 is the team
of Dale Ebberts,
Canyon Lake, CA, and Ernie Castro Jr.,
Newport Beach, CA, in a Jimco-Toyota.
Fourth in Class
10 and 10th in overall points with 101 is Ron Dalke, Tucson, AZ, in a
Tatum-Toyota.
Two racers, with
99 points each so far, are tied for 11th in overall points. James Golden,
Costa Mesa, CA, leads the SCORE Lite
class in a Jimco-VW
while Travis Brookshire, Alpine, CA, is fifth in Class 10 in a Jimco-Honda.
Five
points behind Josh Baldwin in SCORE Trophy-Truck and six behind Jason Baldwin
is Bob Shepard, Phoenix, in a Chevy Silverado while tied for fourth
in the marquee
class are the brother team of Tim and Ed Herbst, Las Vegas, in a Ford F-150
and the team of Mark Post, San Juan Capistrano, CA/Curt LeDuc, Cherry
Valley, CA, in another Ford F-150.
Among the motorcycle
classes, Tim Morton, Escondido, CA, leads the overall standings and the
Class 21 points on a CPFX while
ahead in the ATV overall
and Class 25 point standings is the team led by Josh Frederick, Moapa, Nev.,
on a
Hondar TRX450R.
Opening the season
with two straight race wins, brothers Donald Moss, Sacramento, CA/Kenneth
Moss, Marysville, CA (Class 3-Ford Bronco)
have now won
nine consecutive SCORE races and four straight years in San Felipe.
Four other
early class leaders in the 2005 SCORE Desert Series who has also started
the year undefeated are: Craig Turner, Yorba Linda, Calif. (Class 7-Ford
Ranger)
John Holmes, Olvenhain, Calif. (Class 7S-Ford Ranger), Todd Wyllie, New River,
Ariz. (Class 8-Chevy C1500) and Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 9-Garibay-VW).
